Thomas was a disciple who did not believe that Jesus had risen from the dead, and told the other disciples that he would only believe when he could touch his punctured hands and feet. When Jesus showed himself to him later on, he asked, "Thomas, why did you not believe?" So the term was coined, Doubting Thomas.
