The stereotype of a witch has roots in early modern Europe, particularly during the witch hunts of the 16th and 17th centuries. Women who did not conform to society's norms, such as those who lived alone or practiced herbal healing, were often accused of witchcraft. These stereotypes were perpetuated through folklore, literature, and religious beliefs.

Cartoons. Ever since cartoons came out with witches with green skin, pointy hats, flying broomsticks, black cats, long noses, severe skin conditions and gross, black cauldrons, witches have been stereotyped to be exactly that. That's why a lot of people don't believe in witches.

Does acknowledging a stereotype perpetuate it?

Acknowledging a stereotype does not necessarily perpetuate it, but how the stereotype is addressed and the context in which it is discussed can make a difference. Why do you tend to stereotype groups to which you do not belong instead of groups you do belong?

We usually stereotype groups to which we do not belong to. For example the poor usually stereotype the rich and the rich usually stereotype the poor. We tend to stereotype groups to which we do not belong instead of groups we do belong to because the more individuals in a group we know personally, the more difficult it is to believe a stereotype about them.
