The term "kangaroo court", surprisingly did not originate in Australia. The most plausible explanation for the phrase seems to have come from the Californian goldfields, and became a reference to the trial given to people accused of "claim jumping". Because claim jumping was a crime of disloyalty, people often decided the outcome of the trial before the accused was even sentenced, so the whole court proceeding became a sham - which came to be known as a "kangaroo court".
