Where does the word Yankees originate from Is it Jan-Kees or Jan-Kaas as dubbed by the English. I would love a definitive answer on this. Thank you all very much?

The term Yankee originates from the native Americans (Indians) When the settlers came to the west they were mostly the Dutch who are famous for their cheese, the natives refered to them as 'Jan Kasse' or 'John Cheese' and so the term 'Yankees' came to be through sort of Chinese whispers over the years
