The term Yankee originates from the native Americans (Indians) When the settlers came to the west they were mostly the Dutch who are famous for their cheese, the natives refered to them as 'Jan Kasse' or 'John Cheese' and so the term 'Yankees' came to be through sort of Chinese whispers over the years
