Australia is the world's largest producer of bauxite. In 2012, it represented 30% of global production.There are five main bauxite mining areas in Australia:

  • Boddington, Huntly and Willowdale in Western Australia - these three areas are in the Darling Range in the far southwest of the continent
  • Weipa in Queensland - this is on the western coast of Cape York Peninsula, in the far north of the state
  • Gove in the Northern Territory - northeast Arnhem Land, on the Gove Peninsula
There are two more potential bauxite producing areas which have not yet been developed: the Mitchell Plateau and Cape Bougainville in northern Western Australia, in the far northwest of the continent.
