For a long time, there was a steamboat ferry service from Tampa to Key West but a hurricane a few decades back finished that service off. Within the past few years, efforts have been made to make Key West more accessible by sea again. There is currently ferry service to Key West from the ferry terminal in Fort Myers and Marco Island. There is no ferry service to Key West from Tampa, but it's definitely a great idea. As the Tampa Bay metro area looks at ways to expand mass transit, one of their key plans is to add ferry service to and from ferry ports in Tampa, St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Sarasota, and Bradenton. A natural extension of that plan would be to add stops in Fort Myers and/or Key West. There are overseas options for travelers too - cruise ships depart several times a week from Tampa to dock in Key West before venturing on to the Caymans and Mexico.
