The Dominican Republic uses North American area codes 809, 829, and 849.

Originally, area code 809 served many different Caribbean and nearby islands, including Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Jamaica, Bahamas, Bermuda, Barbados, Grenada, and Trinidad and Tobago. In the mid-1990's, each of the island nations or territories received its own separate area code, leaving only the Dominican Republic in 809. Area codes 829 and 849 were added as overlay codes for 809, each serving the entire Dominican Republic.

The country code for the Dominican Republic, and the other islands mentioned above, along with the USA and Canada, is +1. From other parts of country code +1, calls to the Dominican Republic are dialed the same way as domestic calls (for example, 1-809-000-0000), although international call charges will apply.

(The plus sign means "insert your international access prefix here." From a GSM mobile phone, you can enter the number in full international format, starting with the plus sign. The most common prefix is 00, but Japan uses 010, Australia uses 0011, and many other countries use different prefixes.)
