It's called the Upstate. This is the northwestern part of the state, above the Sandhills which are the prehistoric remnants of the old coastline. The Upstate is close to the Appalachian (also called Blue Ridge or Great Smokey) Mountains. The Lowcountry is the southeastern third of the state, closest to the Atlantic Ocean.
