It depends on the translation but The New English Bibleuses it at Exodus 3:15; and 6:3. In the King James Versionit is found at Exodus 6:3; Psalm 83:18; Isaiah 12:2; and 26:4. Most translations use the word LORD in all caps signifying that the term lord is to replace the Tetragrammaton which is pronounced in English as Jehovah or Yahweh. This is because Jews then, and even today, regard the name of God (Yah weh - "I Am") as so holy that they do not speak it out of solemn respect, and replace it with the word 'Adonai' (or similar words) meaning 'Lord'.
Thus, to the Jew, the insistance of some people (notably the Jehovah's Witnesses) incessantly calling God 'Jehovah' can be seen as disrespectful and even offensive.
Hi John,
Are you a Jew? Can you please tell us why "calling God Jehovah" is disrespectful and even offensive?
Thanks.
YHWH, the tetrogrammaton appears 6828 times in the Hebrew text and Jesus spoke about this name in The Bible - Matthew 6 :9
God wishes to be called I AM, (spelled in using the English alphabet as YHVH/YHWH depending on the pronunciation of the third letter). This was said many of time by figures in the bible. God himself was quoted to say to Moses-
God said to Moses "I AM who I am" this is what you are to say to the Israelites "I AM has sent me to you".
When Jesus quoted Hebrew scripture He used God's name - Matthew 4:4(in most bibles this will not include God's name as it has been replaced with Lord, but the divine name was recorded in this scripture that Jesus was quoting in Hebrew which is Deuteronomy 8:3).
Jesus also spoke to his Father about His name in prayer in John 12:28.
So:
1: The name of God appears thousands of times in the bible and therefore it is assumed that God would want us to know it.
2: Jesus asked us to pray for God's name to be sanctified so he would assume that we at least knew it (Matthew 6:9).
3: Jesus used Gods name himself while speaking.
4: Jesus actually prayed to God in the bible to glorify his name - we cannot do that if we do not use it.
When He was walking in the garden and He called out to Adam by name.
Yes, Christians do call the Bible the Word of God.
In some copies of the Bible, in the introduction, it tells you that the name of God YHWH has been taken out of the Bible. If you look in old versions of the King James Bible it still has the name of God, YHWH or Jehovah, in four places. For instance, Psalms 83:18, and Exodus 6:3. But most Bible translations are taking it out and replacing it with 'Lord.' The Bible replaces the 7,000 times God's name Jehovah was there.
God's name is not mentioned in Esther. This is in the Old Testament.
the bible tells me that god and jesus are real and reassures me that everything will be ok in the end. God will come to save us
No, the only real God is the God of the Bible.
In most languages, the God of Christianity is called "God" in whatever the language is, but the Bible also gives us other names for God, such as Jehovah, Yahweh, Elohim, etc., and the translations for these and other biblical names for God may be used also. There is not just one name for God in the Bible.
No sins are hidden from God.
It's called The Bible
If someone decides not to believe that there is not a God, then that is their choice - why the need to call them anything - live and let live.
You can say Jevoah is the real name for god almighty.
The word of God is the Bible. They call it the word of God because God spoke every word of it and in the Bible it says "All scripture is God breathed". GOD BE WITH YOU ALL, AMEN!
