Modern professing Christianity likes to utter the phrase, "Go to church." But nowhere in The Bible does God tell His people to "go to church."
The word "church," in modern parlance has come to mean "a building" of some kind, but the word comes from the inspired "ekklesia" in the Bible.
"Ekklesia": "...a calling out, i.e. (concretely) a popular meeting, especially a religious congregation... KJV--assembly, church." (Strong's Definintions)
Simply stated, ekklesia means "called-out-ones" or "community" as the Literal Bible [LIT] translates it.
So, as most people think of "church" today... the Bible doesn't instruct God's people on how to, literally, "dress for church."
However.... God [Jesus Christ, the WORD of God; the Creator God of the Old Testament - John 1:1-3] did instruct the Israelites on how to prepare themselves to appear before Him three days before He gave them His Ten Commandments. So this might qualify as "how to dress" when you're assembling or congregating with other believers in the LORD's presence.
"...the LORD told Moses, 'Go down and PREPARE THE PEOPLE FOR MY VISIT. Purify them [have them take a bath] and tomorrow, and HAVE THEM WASH THEIR CLOTHING. Be sure they are ready on the third day, for I will come down upon Mount Sinai as all the people watch..." (Ex.19:10-11 NLT New Living Translation)
That's really as good as anyone could expect of anyone who appears in public with other people... much less our Creator. It should just be a normal common courtesy to your neighbor in any case. As God reveals: "...'Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of these the least of My brethren, ye have done it unto Me.'" (Matt.25:40 KJV)
It should be a no-brainer for everyone to be at their best at all times... in dress and hygiene [although we all know that that's not the case in this world]. But no one could rightfully ask more of anyone. In God's eyes, everyone you see out there in the world is HIM! So behave yourself toward everyone in the world the way you would behave and dress before the LORD.
Then you should stand in good stead when you "go to church."
Roman Catholic AnswerYou are operating with a mistaken assumption. The Catholic Church wrote the Bible, the Catholic Church decided which books were canonical (included in the Bible), and the Catholic Church has conserved the Bible through the centuries. The only ones who changed any Scriptures in the Bible are the protestants, who, after fifteen centuries of a Bible preserved by the Catholic Church came along and threw books out of the Bible, and changed the meanings of books they would not throw out.
The word "church" is in the King James Version of the Bible 80 times. It is in 79 verses.
