A:Caleb was, for the people of Judah, the great military leader who followed Moses and helped them conquer the land of the Canaanites. In the Old Testament as it finally came down to us, he is overshadowed by Joshua, the great military leader who the people of the northern kingdom of Israel believed to have followed Moses and helped them conquer the land of the Canaanites. Much of the earliest northern tradition of Joshua is lost, but the Priestly Source, writing during the Babylonian Exile, introduced material to demonstrate that Israel was really part of the Jewish heritage.

Chronologically, Deuteronomy 1:35-36 is probably the earliest mention of Caleb, "Surely there shall not one of these men of this evil generation see that good land, which I sware to give unto your fathers, Save Caleb the son of Jephunneh; he shall see it, and to him will I give the land that he hath trodden upon, and to his children, because he hath wholly followed the LORD." Notice that, here, Joshua is not mentioned as living to go to the Promised Land, although verses that follow, reporting a slightly different tradition, do seem to grant him that privilege. The Book of Numbers, by the Priestly Source, corrects the earlier Deuteronomist passage, by clearly listing both Caleb and Joshua as living to go to the Promised Land, 26:65: "For the LORD had said of them, They shall surely die in the wilderness. And there was not left a man of them, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun."

In the Book of Numbers, Moses sent spies to search the land of Canaan, but the narrative is actually two versions of the same story blended together so that on casual reading it appears to be only one story, one version written by the Yahwist ('J Source') and one by the Priestly Source. In the Yahwist version, Caleb is dominant, but in the Priestly version, Joshua is more important to the narrative:

  • In the Yahwist version (Numbers 13:22-25), the spies only travelled as far north as Hebron (in the future kingdom of Judah). Caleb alone tried to encourage the Israelites to proceed with the conquest (13:30).
  • In the Priestly version (Numbers 13:21), the spies toured the entire Promised Land, 'from the Wilderness of Zin to the entrance to Hamath'. Caleb and Joshua tried to encourage the Israelites to proceed with the conquest (14:6-10a). The spies died in a plague, all except Joshua and Caleb (14:36-38).

The Book of Joshua eulogises Joshua as conquering the land of the Canaanites, with no mention of Caleb. Scholars attribute this to the northern (Israelite) tradition. Chapter 1 of the Book of Judges then has fragments of the early Judahite tradition that has Caleb, and the tribe of Judah, conquering the same cities as the Book of Joshua has Joshua conquer.

Caleb was with the tribes of Israel during the Exodus, he was the only person with enough faith in our Father to take on the giants in the land of Canaan, knowing our Father would be with him in battle. The remainder of Israel feared the giants. You will find Caleb listed in Many books but the ones you are most likely looking for are Numbers 13,14,26,32,34; Deuteronomy 1; Joshua 14, 15 and Judges 1.

What was Caleb purpose in the Bible?

Caleb, son of Jephunneh, is an important figure in the Hebrew Bible, noted for his faith in God when the Hebrews refused to enter the promised land of Canaan. If there was ever a Bible character that displayed a right attitude or "different spirit" toward God and His Word, it would have to be Caleb. Caleb's courage was first displayed after his return from his spy mission into the Promised Land. He was willing to take a stand with God when the crowd was more than willing to oppose God's will. The "key" to our understanding of Caleb's character is found in Numbers 14:24.
