The Zanclean Flood was a catastrophic flood that refilled the Mediterranean Sea, about 5.33 million years ago. The flood carved a 200km long channel at what is now the Straits of Gibraltar. The water level in the Mediterranean basin rose several meters every day, over the course of more than a year. It is estimated that the water velocity in the channel reached 300 km/hour.
