The number 1 cylinder is the very first cylinder at the front of the engine. There are a number ways to find TDC If you are starting from basics then remove the plugs and the valve cover so you can crank the engine by hand and note the valve position. Using a conveniently long bar or screwdriver in #1 cylinder spark plug hole have a helper rotate the crank until #1 reaches it's TDC with both #1 intake and exhaust valves closed. TDC is easy to tell, it's where the screwdriver stops coming up, just go past a bit and then go back. This position should also indicate on the timing indicator as 0TDC. Check your distributor is pointing to or near #1 firing position. Simple as that.
