The #1 plug on the distributor on my 94 tracker is here: find the front hold down screw for the cap (away from the firewall), go counter-clockwise from the screw and the first plug you come to will be #1. The firing order is 1, 3, 4 ,2 moving clockwise around cap.
Number 1 on the distributor cap is the top post closet to the firewall. Looking at the distributor cap it would be... top row 1-3 bottom 2-4
A 1994 Ford Explorer has the Electronic Distributorless Ignition System ( EDIS ) so it has ( 1 ) coil pack that has six towers on it , so there is no distributor cap
Click the link.
Follow the plug wires and they will go to the distributor cap.
The easiest way to find it is to set #1 piston at TDC and see where the rotor is pointing, it should be pointing to number 1 terminal on the distributor cap.
On the 5.0 liter and 5.8 liter V8 engines , # 1 on the distributor cap faces to the REAR and slightly towards the drivers side On the 4.9 liter straight 6 cylinder , # 1 on the distributor cap faces AWAY from the engine
The cap should have a #1 mark. The cap should have a #1 mark.
The wire sequence on the distributor cap just goes 1 thru 6, clockwise, starting from the number one position (which should be marked either on the cap or distributor).
The marked # 1 position on the distributor cap faces towards the REAR
