The Soviet Union, also known as the the USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) was a country where modern day Russia, including some other countrys, for example, Ukraine and Belerus, used to be, thru the 1910's until its downfall in 1991. The USSR is the most famous comunist country, and was the most feared country of the United States, Britain, and many other Democratic countrys. The Soviet Union had a major affect on the outcome of WWII, and were the ones who scared Hitler into commiting suicide. They also sent the first probe into space, the first man, the first probe on the Moon and on Mars. They were also in other conflicts like the Korean War and the Vietnamese War, as well as most famously, the Cold War, although no real fighting happend then. It less than 70 years, the Soviet Union became (next to the US) the worlds biggest superpower.

The Soviet Union disintegrated because of revived attacks on the Communist party. Republics in the Balkans declared themselves independent as other countries began to secede, too. Gorbachev resigned from his seat after surviving a coup and Yeltsin took over as president.

The former Soviet Union collapsed when, in the mid-1980s, Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev (1931- ) allowed the economy to operate more like a free-market system than a Communist state (a form of government in which all property and means of production are publicly owned). Gorbachev made enemies with his policies. Some conservative Communist officials were angered by his decision and the hardships that were created in the transition to a less structured economy. On 22nd Decdember 1991, The Supreme Soviet dissolved itself marking the final stage in the dissolution. On 26th December 1991 Russia (now officially The Russian Federation) was internationally recognised as the legal successor of the former USSR. 1991 This was President Ronald Reagan's primary goal. The money the U.S. was spending on defense was enormous, the end of the cold war could mean the beginning of a thriving economy for the U.S. and the improvement of life for all soviet peoples. Unfortunately, economy and lifestyle is controlled by current governments, not past events. The real end of the cold war came when President Reagan invited the Soviet President to view the U.S. war machine. He took Gorbachev to each of the U.S. Military Forces' Bases and showed him U.S. versus Soviet ability, then bottom-lined him. Ultimately, the word of this spread across the Soviet Union and one day, the East Germans, that have been separated from their family and friends for over 40 years, headed to the Berlin Wall. Upon arriving en-masse, they informed the Guards that the gates are suppose to be open. Not being willing to admit they never got the message, and being unwilling to question their Superiors, the Guards opened the gates and the rest was domino effect. The Berlin Wall fell, and all of the Soviet Union demanded freedom. It was an exciting time... I remember thinking; "What took America 200 years to learn, the ExSoviets could do in 50"... we'll see...they were not good
