Battle of Hexham happened on 1464-05-15.
Carrying the meaning of "beaver stream", the ancient Anglo-Saxons of Britain gave this name to a parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire. And there this family lived, and so that surname was bestowed upon them. John of Beverley (died 721 A.D.) had become an East Anglican bishop, then Bishop of Hexham, then Bishop of York. He founded the town of Beverley and built it's first monastery. He was canonized (officially recognized by the Catholic Church as a Saint) in 1037 A.D. Some of the family moved to Virginia, in the Americas, during the 1660s. Family motto: "Where liberty prevails there is my country!"
As King, Edward VII oversaw only one war, the Second Boer War (1899-1902), but only for one year, as he did not become king until 1901. The war was a victory for the British and Edward was influential in reforming the British Army after the war, in order to correct the problems that had caused so many of its setbacks early in the war.
