Odongo is a fictional character. He is or was a native African Black Boy who is more or less adopted by a Game Warden in British Africa. The warden seems to be very American, though. The film was made in the fifties and used to be aired on late-night movie marathons on TV. Up to a point it crosses the Toby Tyler and maybe Daktari plot lines, but came out before Daktari. The kid has a pet Chimp called Uglypuss or UgalleePuss. Over the course of the story, well the ape dies, again showing a resemb lance to Tyler.

What became of the chimp used in the Disney film Toby tyler?

In the original story ( there may be different edited versions) the Monkey died by being accidentally shot. some disturbed prankster ( never caught) put live ammunition in the Monkey"s revolver used in the circus act and he accidentally shot himself. A somewhat similar plot device- but of natural causes- was a major friction block in the movie (Odongo) the Chimp was called Uglypuss. The Game warden attempted to ameliorate the damage by getting the kid ( Odongo) a new chimp, but this was not a cure-all answer/ The death of an animal is a fairly common cry-jerk plot device in juvenile fiction by the way.
