Catalyst efficiency below threshold (bank1)
You may have a tired catalytic converter on bank 1.
I have a 1998 Mercury Mystique LS automatic w/ a 2.5 liter V6 and it takes Mercon V transmission fluid. I'm not certain if it is the same for you, you should probably consult your owners manual.
The fog light switch on the 98 Mystique is on the headlight switch. When you turn on the headlights, pull the switch towards and the fog lights should come on. Here is a link to the owners manual for the 98 Mystique http://www.analogstereo.com/pdf/om/mystique_owners_manual_1998.pdf
Trouble code P0420 means:Catalyst system efficiency below threshold
If the heater in your 1998 Mercury Mystique LS is stuck on defrost, it may be due to a malfunctioning blend door actuator, which controls air distribution between the defrost, heat, and A/C. Another possible cause could be a vacuum leak in the system, affecting the operation of the HVAC controls. Additionally, a faulty climate control module or a stuck blend door could also contribute to this issue. Checking these components can help identify and resolve the problem.
Either go by the Mercury dealer or call with your VIN None to be found.
The 3.0 litre V6 engine in a 1998 Mercury Villager has a timing BELT
I had the same problem on my 1996 Pontiac firebird, they told me that my ignition cylinder had went out. Maybe you could ask about that, I don't know what would cause that to go out though? I had a similar problem 1998 Mystique LS. It was a burnt out relay. Also the ignition switch (what the key turns on...I'm not a mechanic I think that is what it was called) was worn and I had to replace switch.
According to the 1999 Mercury Mystique Owner Guide : With engine oil filter change : The 2.0 litre four cylinder engine takes ( 4.5 U.S. quarts of 5W-30 ) The 2.5 litre V6 engine takes ( 5.8 U.S. quarts of 5W-30 )
Passenger side, under the dash/behind the glove compartment.
Look behind the glove box. under dash.
My 98 LS has 4 wheel disc brakes. I would not be surprised though if some have drum type brakes in the back - maybe dependent on which motor the vehicle has.
No, engine damage will not occur if the timing belt breaks on a 1999 Mercury Mystique LS Sport with a 2.0-liter non-interference engine. In non-interference engines, the design allows for the pistons and valves to not collide even if the timing belt fails. As a result, the engine will simply stop running, but the internal components should remain unharmed. However, it's still important to replace the timing belt at recommended intervals to prevent unexpected breakdowns.
