What is the size of planetx?
Planet X was the term used for a hypothetical unknown planet to explain certain discrepancies in the orbits of the other planets. It later turned out that the discrepancies were either errors in measurement or could be explained in other ways. The term is also used in certain new age quasi-religious apocalyptic cults to refer to some mysterious invisible planet that is approaching Earth and will result in massive destruction on or about December 2012. Neither of the two actually exist, so asking how big it is is like wondering what size shoe Cinderella wore.
Why is it so hard to prove that planetx exist?
The existence of planets can be proved by visual observation using telescopes or by inference from other observed phenomena or data. In our own solar system, the planets have all been identified by visual observation using telescopes (or the naked eye). For planets in other systems, which are called "exoplanets," planets have been identified indirectly by measuring other detectable features of the system that indirectly confirm a planet (e.g. chemical composition, observing the effects of gravity on visible stars, etc.--although to date three exoplanets have been identified visually as well). The difficulty has to do with the great distances involved. "Planet X" is an old moniker for an undiscovered planet in our own solar system. Early in the 20th century, the behavior of Neptune seemed to indicate that another massive body was exerting gravitational effects on Neptune, which indirectly implied the existence of a ninth planet. Eventually Pluto was discovered and originally called a planet, and many said that Pluto was this "Planet X." However, the gravitational effect that Pluto can have on Neptune (Pluto is very small) is minimal and does not explain all of the anomalies in Neptune's orbit and rotation. (Pluto is no longer considered a planet; it is now a dwarf planet). Some people suppose that a much larger ninth planet may still be out there undiscovered--called Planet X. However, it has not been found to date even as hundreds of nonplanet Kuiper Belt objects like Pluto (Sedna, Makemake, Eris, etc.) are being discovered every year. It could be that the Kuiper belt itself is exerting influence on Neptune, or that other unknown factors may be in play. Most astronomers do not currently believe that a true ninth planet or Planet X exists--but that doesn't mean it's impossible.
