He left an ice axe stuck into the ground on which were attached the flags of The United Kingdom, India, Nepal and the United Nations. Much like the Americans planting the flag on the moon, Hillary planted the flag on Everest for The UK.
So actually Hillary hoisted the flag of Great Britain because England financed their expedition.
The English/British flag was placed on the summit of Mount Everest on the 24th September 1975 by Doug Scott who became the first British climber to reach the summit. Many think that the British flag was placed at the summit by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in 1953 but the only flags they had with them were United Nations, Nepal and a Indian flag.
Nepal's flag is on Mount Everest because Tenzing Norgay was born in Nepal so he decided to put Nepal's flag on Mount Everest.
