In Africa. In Chapter 18 of Tarzan of the Apes, the origin novel, Jane writes to friend from the small cabin on the west African coast in which Tarzan was born, and states that they are located at approximately 10 degrees south latitude. This would place Tarzan's home in Angola, in or near what is now Kissama National Park.
Late 1888 or very early in 1889. The exact date of Tarzan's birth is never stated in the books written by Edgar Rice Burroughs, and is not discernable from the few dates and timelines provided in the text of his origin story, Tarzan of the Apes. The first chapter of Tarzan of the Apes places Tarzan's father and mother, John and Alice Clayton, Lord and Lady Graystoke, on a ship departing England for Africa on a May morning in 1888. It is implied that they had only been married a few months at the time of their departure. A month later they are said to have stopped in Freetown, but no specific length of stay is stated. Eleven days after departing Freetown, in what would logically be in late June or July, 1888, the Claytons were abandoned by mutineers on an isolated coast of West Africa. It is stated (page 27) that John and Alice were both most concerned about their being marooned in the wilderness because Lady Alice was already pregnant; this certain knowledge implying that she was at least two months into her pregnancy. No reference is ever made to the specific stage of her pregnancy. However, none of the mutineers made any comments about an obvious pregnancy when they were deciding between murdering vs. marooning the Claytons. Burroughs wasn't an author to miss such an opportunity for melodrama, so the reader can assume that she was probably no more than 2-3 months pregnant when marooned. It is also said that "months" (implying several) had elapsed between the marooning and Tarzan's birth. The broadest range of potential birth months would be September 1888 through January 1889. Taken as a whole, the clues in the text narrow that range to December 1888 through January 1889.
Tarzan was born and spent his youth on the west coast of Africa, According to the origin novel, Tarzan of the Apes, Tarzan purloined a letter that Jane had written to her friend in Baltimore, stating that she and her party had been marooned on the coast at approximately 10 degress south latitude. This would place them in the Angolan state of Benga, in what is now Kissama National Park. Coincidentally, there is a protected navigable inlet just as described in the novel at 10.085 south latitude.
Tarzan was officially born in a little cabin on an African coast.
Tarzan debuted in 1914 . Tracing the timeline in the origin novel, Tarzan of the Apes, it is likely that Tarzan was born late in late 1888 or early in 1889.
