What impact do cane toads have on Quolls?

Cane toads have had a major impact on quoll populations in Queensland and the Northern Territory. Quolls are carnivores, and feed on birds, reptiles, arthropods and mammals up to the size of a possum. Habitat loss has resulted in fewer of these species and thus a reduced food source for the quolls, so they have resorted to eating cane toads. Spotted-tail and Northern Quolls are both being killed off as a result of eating the Cane Toad, which is poisonous.

Where do northern quolls live?

Where in Australia do quolls live?

This depends on the species. There are four species of quoll in Australia.1. Spotted tailed quolls, also known as tiger quolls, live in bushland, coastal heathland andrainforest along the eastern coast of Australia.2. Northern quolls live in rocky areas and eucalyptus bushland from northeast Queensland right along the northern coast to northwestern Western Australia.3. Eastern quolls live in a range of habitats, from heavily wooded bushland and rainforest, to grasslands and even agricultural fringes in Tasmania. They are believed to be extinct on the mainland.4. The Western quoll, also known as the Chudich, has retreated to just the far southwestern corner of the Australian continent. It used to be found in Queensland, but has not been sighted there for decades.Within their habitat, quolls shelter in hollow logs, rock crevices or burrows in the sand.

Does land clearing affect Northern quolls?

Land clearing affects Northern Quolls to some extent, as it does all quolls. Land clearing not only removes the quolls' shelter, but it reduces the number of hiding places for the quolls' prey, so the prey moves on to safer areas. However, there are two more significant threats to the Northern Quoll. The Northern quoll is particularly affected by fire, due largely to the introduction of the weed Gamba Grass. Gamba Grass is highly invasive, out-competing native grasses. It affects the Northern quoll because it is a high biomass pasture grass that tends to promote very hot, intense fires during the late dry season. Gamba Grass fires are eight times hotter and more intense than those produced by native grasses. This poses a risk to the Northern Quoll by either killing them directly in the fires, or removing the availability of shelter and habitat to protect the quoll from larger predators and birds of prey. Another major threat to Northern Quolls is that, as their food source is reduced (largely by land clearing), they ate forced to find alternative food, and one of these is the cane toad. Their population is declining significantly as a result of them eating the Cane Toad, which is poisonous when ingested.

Does lantana kill plants that northern quolls eat from?

Northern quolls are carnivorous and do not eat plants and vegetation. Lantana is, however, an invasive species that kills off native grasses and vegetation from which naive mammals and birds feed, hence reducing the number of animals for the Northern quoll to prey upon.

What is the range of the Northern quoll?

Northern quolls live in rocky areas and eucalyptus bushland from southeast Queensland right along the northern coast to northwestern Western Australia.
