Follow the upper radiator hose to its end (away from the radiator.)
This is the thermostat housing. Unbolt the thermostat housing and see all the people thermostats.
i can tell you for sure that they will interchange with a 94!
The coolant could have frozen in the radiator. If that happens the coolant in the engine will just get hotter. It could also be the thermostat.
On my 93 the thermostat is behind the water pump. If you remove the waterpump you will see the thermostat.

I've had the same problem before and after a new thermostat, but have never had a problem with over heating. I have a feeling the gauge is very sensitive.
The thermostat on a 1993 Toyota Celica can be found by following the outlet radiator hose. The thermostat on these cars are located at the bottom of the radiator.
follow the top radiator hose to intake ,its inside the thermostat cover.
Follow the top radiator hose to where it connects to the engine. This is the thermostat housing and the thermostat is inside there.
Where the top radiator hose connects to the engine the part connected to the hose is a 2 bolt housing. Take out the two bolts and your thermostat is behind the housing. After removing the 2 bolts if the housing is stuck, try prying gently to get it apart from the engine.

The thermostat housing is located on the passengers side of the engine block, behind the timing belt.
