underneath the plastic cover on the engine head are the spark plug wires, there are 2 coil packs there. the wires connect the coil packs. 2 of the spark plugs are under the coil packs and the other 2 are exposed...
The Ignition Control Module (ICM) is located directly above the coil. If you remove the 2 bolts holding the coil on and then romove the coil mounting plate from the car you will see a small rectangular module with wires plugged into it. This is the ICM.
Coil 2 is located where the other seven are found (if you have a V8). Underneath a cover on the valve covers. Yes the valve covers have a small wide cover that houses the COP coil plugs. This is located on the outdoor coil. It is usually toward the bottom of the condenser coil and will have 2 wires attached to it. These wires come from the sensor and go into the defrost control board. It is a disc and is easily removed from the coil.
On a 1996 Mercury Grand Marquis with the 4.6 liter SOHC , V8 engine : There are ( 2 ) coil packs with ( 4 towers on each ) They are located at the front area of the engine , just follow the spark plug wires to each of the ( 2 ) coil packs
