on the 05 (and presumably other 3.8s of the same body style) it's just under the thermostat housing (where the upper radiator hose connects to the engine).

The coolant temperature sensor, on a 2005 Ford escape, can be changed by loosening the sensor retaining nut. Once the knot is removed the sensor will pull out.
The 2005 Chevrolet Equinox coolant temperature sensor can be found on the front of the engine. The coolant temperature sensor will be approximately 2 inches above the thermostat housing.
Should be on the drivers side of engine, between #3 and #5 spark plugs.
It is screewed into the drivers side head, back beside the last spark plug.
water pump, oil, water, engine coolant....main cause would be engine coolant, just check to see if you have a leak.
