It is 18 years old and it is an electronic part. They eventually wear out. You have been lucky it lasted this long. Be sure and change the fuel filter when you change the pump. It can also be a blown fuse or defective fuel pump relay.

Had the same thing happen on my '94 Dodge Ram 1500. Fixed the problem by replacing the fuel pump.
