China, Australia, and Brazil are the world's largest providers providers of iron ore, but more than forty other countries, including the US and Canada, produce significant amounts. The Michigan and Minnesota regions provide most of the US production of iron ore. Iron compounds are fourth in abundance among all the elements in Earth's crust. It is the second most abundant of all metals; aluminum is the only metal that is more abundant than iron. The oldest known iron artifacts, made about 6,000 years ago, have been found in Egypt.

Iron is the most abundant element on Earth and found on many parts of the planet but only the fourth most abundant element in the Earth's crust. Large deposits are found on all continents.

The largest open pit iron ore mine in the world is Hull-Rust-Mahoning Mine- near Hibbing, Minnesota.
