General OverviewKatmandu. The name says it all. It’s the capital city of Nepal and sits at an elevation of 1400 meters or 4600 feet above sea level. Katmandu is the cultural center of the country and sits in the Katmandu valley, surrounded by vast Himalayan mountain skylines, farmers’ fields, and Buddhist and Hindu shrines. In the past this was a very difficult city to reach or explore, but modernization has made it here. There is abundant air travel into Katmandu, and a touristy area of the city called Thamel with upscale restaurants and hotels.The city bustles with people and all kinds of sights, sounds, and smells. There a huge varieties of small shops selling all kinds of handcrafted curios, incense, and spices. There are cows wandering in the street and cannabis dealers, businessmen and yogis, tourists and old craftsmen. As long as you pay attention to who you’re dealing with, this is an activity filled city that the whole family can enjoy.Arts and EntertainmentArts and entertainment of an impromptu nature can be found by simply walking around at night. Leave the touristy downtown areas and wander the back streets in the old sections of town. There are spontaneous groups of musicians that play in front of temples, and any passer by is welcome to listen.If you want to check out a more western style club scene, head back to Thamel. That’s where most of the bars and clubs are. They often feature live rock and other types of music. Not too many. But in the tourist areas, such as Kathmandu, Thamel, etc, the number of tourists have increased thus leading to an increase also in Nepali natives knowing a bit of english for trade, services, and for business. The further you go from the tourist cities, the less people will know, if any, english at all. Their official language is Nepali, a differential of Hindi, but many shopkeepers and hotel managers learn basic english in the response of so many Westerners visiting for different purposes... including Everest Expeditions, where Kathmandu would be the main gateway point into the mountain.

While Trekking in Nepal, trekkers can use two types of trekking, Tea house trekking and Camping trekking. In Camping trekking, trekkers sleep in tents, different tents are available. In tea house trek, trekkers sleep in local guest houses, guest houses have simple and clean beds. Most of the guest houses have solar hot shower. In few places, good hotels are also available with inside shower and bathroom.
