The Ruger Mini-14 has never been able to accept the M16/AR-15 magazine. A proprietary magazine for the Mini-14 has always been used. If you find a way to convert a Mini-14 to accept STANAG magazines, I'm open to suggestions, but I have not been able to find one yet.
How do you load a magazine into a Ruger Mini 30 with an ATI composite stock?
You must first measure and file or mill down the magazine well VERY carefully, as generally the Mini 30 and Mini 14 aftermarket stocks are sold as one and the same. The Mini 14, firing a smaller (5.56) round than the Mini 30 (7.62) naturally has a somewhat smaller magazine, requiring a smaller opening. When I purchased my ATI "Mini 30 Composite Stock" the instructions stated that it could also be used for a Mini 14. I filed about 1/8" or so of material from either side of the magazine well, and this was just enough to get the magazine to fit snugly into the well. Bear in mind when doing this, that the wear and tear of inserting and removing a magazine from this opening will make the opening larger over time, so DO NOT FILE OFF TOO MUCH OFF THE MATERIAL! You can always SUBTRACT more material, but you can't add more if you mess it up! I used a 10 round magazine as my guide when doing this, as the 5 round was sort of tough to force in and out while trying to get the size correct. The final product operates and looks perfect.
