Some historians think they had their start in southern France or northern Italy in 610 when a monk was making unleavened bread for Lent. There is another theory that they were made by monks to teach religion, to feed the poor, and for marriage ceremonies for the couple to break and make a wish on ( neat idea). Another source states they are from Germany. I find it interesting that at least two sources cite monks in the 6th and 7th centuries as the creators of the pretzel in northern Europe. I would say that is about as close as we are going to get as an answer to this question.
