Yes Songkran is considered to be a religious festival. It marks the Thai new year according to the Buddhist lunar calender. Water is symbolic at Songkran because, an important part of the festival, is the washing away of misdeeds and bad luck from the previous year, in order to begin afresh in the new year. Images of the Lord Buddha are washed ceremoniously by Buddhist monks in preparation for the new year.
