Some vehicles equipped with a traction control that have both 2 wheel drive and 4 wheel drive options can turn off traction control before putting the vehicle in gear by switching the vehicle from 4 wheel drive to 2 wheel drive. Vehicles that have 4 wheel drive all the time usually do not allow for traction control to be turned off.

could be the 4 wheel drive module located behind the glove compartment. If you don"t hear a click when you press the button to engage the module isn't working.

I have a 2001 Ford Explorer sport trac and the module is located behind the front passengers side panel. I would have to believe that the 2002 Explorer would be the same.
4 wheel drive module located in the passenger side kick panel. Most likely condensation got in the plug. About 450.00 to replace it at a dealer! Checked on 7/27/07.
