Virginia is not located on a major fault line. The state is located in the middle of a tectonic plate, which is why Virginia has a much lower rate of earthquakes than California, which is on the edge of a tectonic plate. That being said, Virginia is home to a smaller seismic zone, which does result in lower magnitude earthquakes. A smaller seismic zone results from small, interlaced fault lines in the bedrock. We learned about this on a recent trip to Colonial Williamsburg. The "s" as we know it now was a "final s" (used at the end of a word and some other specific times). The long "s" was written similarly to an "f" with the following distinction: In writing an "f", the middle line crosses the downward line (as it does in modern script). In writing a "long s", the middle line goes from the left to (but not crossing) the downward line. For more details, go to http://colonialsense.com/Society-Lifestyle/Signs_of_the_Times/Long_S.php
