We learned about this on a recent trip to Colonial Williamsburg. The "s" as we know it now was a "final s" (used at the end of a word and some other specific times). The long "s" was written similarly to an "f" with the following distinction: In writing an "f", the middle line crosses the downward line (as it does in modern script).
