The Cotes du Marmandais is a wine district located in south west France. It is technically a satellite wine region of Bordeaux and is located on both sides of the Garonne river. Cotes du Marmandis was elevated from VDQS status to AC in 1990. The predominate grape varieties grown in the area are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot however, these varieties musn't exceed 3/4 of production. The grape that make Cotes du Marmandis wines distict is the local grape variety of Abouriou. When Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot or Cabernet Franc is used in a wine it must be blended with any or all of these varieties, Abouriou, Fer, Gamay and Syrah. As a result of the cooler climate (location is upriver) the result are light colored reds and rose, bordeaux. A little white wine is also produced made from Semillon, Ugni Blanc, Muscadelle and Sauvignon Blanc.

Which wines are semi sweet?

Semillon is a type of grape. Semillon is used to make the sauternes wines, which are sweet wines, usually called "dessert wines" because they are good "companions" to a dessert. However, Semillon is also used, with Sauvignon Blanc, to make white Bordeaux that are not sweet. It all depends on the intentions of the winemaker.

What are some typical characteristics of German wines?

Since German wines come from a marginal climate ( cool and damp where in some years the grapes won't fully ripen). This type of climate can produce wines that are high in acidity and low in alcohol. Even though many North Americans believe all wines from Germany are sweet and fruity believe it or not a lot are dry. Due to the climate in Germany if the grapes don't ripen the wines can be very sharp to the taste. It is legal for German winemakers to allow some of the grape juice to be left unfermented (in some countries like the US this practice is illegal). The unfermented grape juice provides the wine with some fruitiness and balances the acidity. Quality German wines tend to have a refreshing acidity, never a cloying acidity.
