Fort Peck does not form out of a lake. The lake itself is formed from the Missouri River that was dammed by Fort Peck Dam in 1933. Fort Peck was the local trading post named for Colonel Campbell K. Peck and Commander E. H. Durfee. The town of Fort Peck is located a mile north of the lake.
