On board diagnostics (OBD) or from 1996 to present (OBD II) is a self diagnostic system incorporated into the (PCM) power train control module or vehicle computer. To retrieve (DTC's) diagnostic trouble codes on vehicles 1996 and newer there is a (DLC) data link connector that a tester is plugged into. The exact location of the plug differs from model to model. There was a standard set forth that it should be placed somewhere that the technician could reach it while sitting in the drivers seat. Most are under the drivers kick panel.
Most 1995 and older vehicles did not come with this DLC, because it was not required. Acuras from 1986-1995 have what is call an (SCS) service check connector that is shorted with a jump wire to retrieve codes by counting the number of flashes of the light on the instrument cluster applicable to the system you are checking. IE, Check engine light, Anti lock brake system light, etc. This SCS connector is also located in different areas. On a 1995 integra for example, it is located under the glove box.
