What was the cause of the pueblo revolt?
It began by a signal issued by Po'pay of the Ohkay Owingeh scheduled for 13 August 1680 but broke out prematurely on 10 August with the murder of a priest nine miles from Santa Fe. The revolt cost the lives of 400 Spaniards including 21 of the 33 Priests in New Mexico. When the Spanish left the Pueblo Natives kept their distance and the colonists were allowed to retreat to El Paso. They made two attempts in the following years to retake Santa Fe, but were repulsed. Not until this Pueblo religious leader died did the Spanish reopen their colony with new rules in place. The enslavement was ended and the Natives could practice their own faith while professing to be Christians.
