Who was Woptura?

Woptura was the first Yuwipi Wicasa of the Oglala Lakota Oyati. He was born in 1836, and was the mentor of Crazy Horse. They grew up together and were "made relatives" through ceremony. Woptura gave Crazy Horse his protection from his enemies. But it couldn't protect him from his own people, one of which, held him while he was mortally stabbed. After he died, Woptura took his body off to a secret place so it could never be disturbed. Only he knew where Crazy Horse was buried. He died Jan 4 1916 and is buried on Pine Ridge Rez, S.D. The name was changed to "Horn Chips", and "Moves Camp". His descendants still live on the Pine Ridge Rez, many in the town of Wanblee. The name has been shortened to "Chipps", some have reverted back to "Woptura".

Facts about devils tower?

Native Americans have many beliefs on how this tower was created. One folk tale, told by the Lakota's, is about two Indian boys who were playing in a great prairie. They played all day, so they wondered around, and soon found a river. They began to follow this river, and over a big hill, and soon lost their way. They starting walking back, but only got further and further away. They grew tired and curled up by a tree, and went to bed. Then the next morning, they hoped to have someone from their families find them, but they had no luck. This went on for a couple more days, and finally, the boys felt as if they were being followed. They soon saw the giant grizzly bear. The boys started running, and since they could find no place to hide. So they began to pray to Wakan Tanka, the Creator to save them. Suddenly, the land began to shake, and the ground began growing up and before they knew it, they were high in the air on a huge rock. The grizzly bear, Moto, attempted to reach the top, leaving his claws all down the sides, but lost sight of the boys. They had disappeared into the skys. Wanblee, the eagle, brought the boys safely back home. (Boy Scouts.)Another one, told by the Sioux, believes that seven Sioux girls were picking flowers one day, when suddenly they came across a group of bears. They began chasing the girls, and the girls couldn't out run them. Having mercy on these girls, the Great Spirit raised the ground beneath the girls, forming protection for them. The bears tried to climb the rock, but fell off, leaving their scratch marks on the sides. The girls were then pushed into the heavens, where they then became the seven stars of the Pleiades.
