The Sea of Galilee is a small fresh-water lake in the north of what is now known as Israel. The name 'Sea of Galilee' seems to have originated with Mark's Gospel, possibly to help readers understand where the lake was and, by calling it a sea, emphasise the drama of events occuring there. The lake was known to Jews as the Lake of Gennesaret and to Romans as Lake Tiberias. The disciples, in spite of being seasoned fishermen, feared the ship would be swamped. In fear for their lives, the disciples woke Jesus. This passage first appeared in Mark 4:35-41 and was subsequently copied into Matthew 8:18-27 and Luke 8:23-25.

The gospel tells us that when Jesus rebuked the wind, the wind ceased; when he told the sea to be still, it was still. To the ancient Greek audience of Mark's Gospel, Jesus had by these actions superseded Zeus. The event would also have reminded early readers that just a few verses earlier, Jesus had called James and John the 'sons of thunder', and might have reminded some of Castor and Polydeuces, who were known as the 'sons of the Thunderer (Zeus)'.

In the second passage, which occurs in a similar context to the first, the 'sons of thunder' asked to be seated on the right hand and left hand of Jesus in heaven. This strange request could cause ancient Greeks to again associate the brothers with Castor and Polydeuces, sons of Zeus the thunderer, who were often portrayed as seated on the right hand and left hand of Zeus. And by comparing James and John with Castor and Polydeuces, the author once again compared Jesus with Zeus, the greatest of the Greek gods in mythology.
