the VIN number on a Polaris sportsman 500 quad can be found on the left side frame well.
2006 Sportsman 500 efi, green and black.
Model and VIN numbers are stamped on the left lower frame rail near the rear of the front a-arm ,

1998 the 10th charicter represents the year model W means 1998
the 10th digit is the year - so 2000

The 10th digit is the year ID and in this case you have a Y which is a 2000.
Stamped on left side of frame inside left wheel well. I dont know who answered this but on 96 and earlier the vins are on a tag welded to the right hand down tubein the front fender well and could verry well only be 7 digits and if the bmv give you grief tell them to get their info straight.
