on the tongue - the last two numbers will be the year it was assembled (not necessarily the model year... mine is a 1968, but the VIN ends in 67 because it was built in Nov. of 67.) On one side of the tongue will be the VIN, on the other will be the part number from the manufacturer of the tongue. I can't remember which side each is on. It may be rusted and/or painted over, so it may take some work to locate and reveal it. Good Luck

If it is home made the MVD will issue you a vin number if it passes inspection.
A VIN search is performed in most states by a certified VIN Inspector, and/or a county official or peace officer, such as a Deputy Sheriff. Performing a VIN inspection is a fairly straight forward process where the VIN on the title or pink slip is compared to the VIN etched into the frame of the vehicle. Depending on the vehicle it is not usual to check the VIN in at least two locations on the vehicle. The VIN on a trailer is usually located on the tongue portion of the trailer or the front portion of the frame. In some cases a VIN plaque is affixed to the side or interior of the trailer. A typical VIN inspection of a trailer will only involve checking for the VIN on the tongue.
You don't! The best thing you can do is park it next to the Mexican border!
