Take off the plastic cupholder fairing that surrounds the shifter; it's under the deck and AC controls.
The 2001 Mazda Prot?g? air conditioning fuse can be found in the fuse box. The air conditioning fuse will be in the first column, third from the bottom.
It's due to your car not having freon go and get it charged. The cold air is from you driving!
The system is probably low on refrigerant so it is short cycling. A basic recharge should cure it.
On a 1998 Protege it's in-between the engine and the radiator (on top) directly behind the hood latch. I would tighten the cap by hand.For all mechanical and electric connections (or any connection) my philosophy is: If it doesn't fit DON'T force it, look for the correct one or ask a qualified professional in that field because you can't make a wrong right.
the a\c clutch for the compressor is probably staying on when you turn the car off. It could be the ignition switch. or a bad relay.

Inside of fuse box under hood...after lifting top off the fuse is black and has B458
I just asked somebody the same question and his answer was to re-route the belt. =edit= I had this exact problem happen to me. I was told there was an adapter to install, but that it was an easy fix. This was after a mechanic tried to get me to pay for the AC, insisting there was no other way to get the PS back.
