At the bottom of the Air-filter Box, if memory serves me correctly. The air intake to the engine connects to the lid of the Air-filter Box. On non-turbo models this is located at the front, right-hand side of the Engine Bay. However, on Turbo models its on the left.

On a 240 Volvo (which basically should have the same engine) it is directly under the intake manifold. On a 1985-740 previous comment is right On a 1990-740, driver side, on top the engine between injectors #3 and #4 a big tubing and a small vaccum hose attach to the flame trap

One has a turbocharger, and the other doesn't. The turbocharger is mounted on the exhaust manifold and uses the exhaust gases to drive a turbine which is connected to another turbine that forces fresh air into the intake manifold. This added air increases horsepower and torque.
Remove the ashtray and you will find them there.
