About fifty miles west of Richmond Virginia. At the time of the Civil War it was a tiny village of perhaps a dozen houses, plus the county courthouse. The railroad had come through but by-passed Appomattox Courthouse when laying its tracks, and the newer town of Appomattox Station was about a mile and a half away. Today Appomattox Station is simply Appomattox, and Appomattox Courthouse is frozen in time, preserved (or rebuilt) as it was that day as part of a National Park.
Not in a city- it WAS the village of Appomatox Courthouse. The current village is located about 5 miles South of the historical courthouse. In rural areas, the county seat would usually be referred to the the (fill in the county) Courthouse.
