The switch for the backup light switch for an automatic transmission is located on the transmission where the shifting cable enters the transmission (The side of the transmission closest to the radiator),how about for the manual trans mission models?
locationof backup switch 1997 mustang
You didn't state weather it was an Automatic or Manual transmission. Well any way they are both on the transmission. Manual transmission has a separate switch for the backup lights the automatic is built into the neutral safety switch on the transmission. Automatic switch is about $50.00. Manual switch is about $10.00. Hope you have a manual it is a lot cheaper.
It is combined with the neutral safety switch and mounts to the transmission where the shifter linkage is attached.
The neutral start switch mounted on your automatic transmission also serves as the back up lamp switch.
Standard or automatic transmission, they both are mounted to the transmission.
On the driver's side of the transmission (range select cable is attached to it).
If you have an automatic transmission it is on top of he steering column just before it goes through the firewall. If you have a manual transmission it is on the transmission.
Those switches are all located where the shifter attaches to the top of the transmission, on the shifter iself.
It is screwed into the driver's side of the transmission, right in the middle.
Try either at the lower end of steering column or attached to the linkage on the transmission
