If its the 3.4L it has an automatic tensioner. look right under the alternator and there is a pulley. That pulley and arm is the tensioner. To release the tension, there is a bolt on the inside of the pulley, put a wrench on it and pull like you are trying to tighten the bolt. The arm is spring loaded and will pull up, releasing tension.

the serpentine belt has a ten-shun-er (sorry cant spell) that has a loaded spring in it. if the ten-shun-er is not working then the belt will be loose. the ten-shun-er keeps adaquitt pressure on the belt. if the belt is loose than look at the ten-shun-er
the belt will squeal at start up. most cars have a serpentine belt (only 1 belt ) which also has a belt tension er to keep the proper ten. on the belt at all times. there is no tightening required. if belt is loose replace the tension er

what is the difference between 10 meq er of potassium and 99 mg of potassium
The last thing you want to do is apply grease to a timing belt. If the belt is noisy it needs replacing or the tension-er needs replacing.
Regardless of what type of vehicle you have, it is extremely difficult to replace a serpentine belt w/o a serpentine un-tension-er tool. This is a thin, long handle with a socket on the end that sticks out at 90 degrees of the handle. The socket slips onto the bolt-head of the tension-er pulley. Once the serpentine belt is threaded around all the other pulleys you put the un-tension-er tool on the tension-er pulley bolt and pull (or push) to achieve slack in the serpentine belt and slip it on the tension-er pulley.
er... ME for one and probably about 99% of the heterosexual male population
there's a spring loaded tension-er on the right side of the engine.. look at your belt diagram on your engine and you'll see the belt tension-er looking like it's pointing to the northeast of the little diagram.. the easiest way to relieve the pressure is get a crowbar, pull up on the tension-er until it relieves the pressure. I'm actually putting a new belt on my 91' 3.1 Corsica
Remove the rear wheel and belt covers. Remove old belt. Check numbers on new and old to be sure of fit. thread new belt through front pulleys and over rear wheel pulley. Get rear axle ready and depress belt tension-er while somebody slides in axle bolt and secures. Release tension-er and reinstall covers.
