Evaporation: Water in big bodies (rivers, lakes, the ocean) and transpiration (water from plants) enters the air as gas when it is heated. Condensation: The gas comes together in the air to form a cloud. Precipitation: The cloud becomes colder and the water vapor becomes liquid. The liquid falls to the earth's surface (rain). Runoff: The water on the ground goes to big bodies of water and evaporates again.
Seventy-one percent of the Earth's surface is covered by water. While most water is found in oceans and other water bodies, a small percentage is below ground and in the air.
