Why the shifter will not shift out of park unless you apply the parking brake and turn on the key and turn it back one click on a ford f-250?
Shift interlock solenoid is not letting shift mechanism to release, possible brake switch failure, faulty solenoid, or wiring.
Possibly the brake light switch is bad. I had a recall on a Ford Taurus that spoke of this problem. The brake light switch releases a solenoid that holds the shifter in park.
It is a small solenoid that is accutated when the brake pedal is applied allowing shifter to move. This is located at the shifter and can be heard if all is quiet shifter in park and brakes applied.
It is on the steering column, but those rarely go bad. In fact, I have never had to replace one. Almost always it is because you have no brake lights. Possibly a bad brake light switch.
On a 2003 Lincoln Navigator : A problem has been detected with the Anti-lock Brake System It could be a fuse , a sensor , or some other problem As long as the red " BRAKE " light is not on in your dash , you still have " normal " brakes
It is a 9mm allen.
On a 2003 Lincoln Navigator : Fuse # 29 is a 30 amp mini fuse for the trailer tow electric brake controller , trailer tow 7 wire connector ( electric brake )
The shifter on automatic transmission cars is interlocked with the brake. You can not take it out of PARK unless you press on the brake pedal. If you are pressing on the brake and it still will not come out of PARK, the interlock solenoid may be bad.
The shift mechanism is only allowed to move from park if and when the brake pedal is pressed. Possible causes are, faulty brake pedal switch, shift interlock solenoid, wiring, or broken shift button. Possible shift linkage or transmission problem. Find the procedure for "bypassing or overriding the shift interlock" for further diagnosis.
There's a solenoid on the steering collom. When you put on the brakes. It sends power to that solenoid. Than it should come out of park. Check fuse for brake lites. Check brake lites swicth on brake pattle.
You need to remove lower plastic cover of your steering Colom. It is on the shifter side. It is black with a small white plastic circle under it.
Can someone help me with the same promble.. how do you change the front brake pads and what tools do you need to do the job
I believe that is a 7mm Allen.
The 2003 Navigator suspension module is located under the dash on drivers side above the parking brake pedal.
When the breaks are pressed right after you start your car why is there a knocking noise underneath the car in this 2008 Toyota matrix?
the sound that you are hearing is the transmission interlock solenoid. It is designed to keep the shifter in park until you put your foot on the brake pedal. it's normal to hear the solenoid disengaging the locking bar when pressing the brake pedal after starting the car.
The 2001 Escape, with the gear shifter on the steering column, has an interlock solenoid located by the shifter assembly. The purpose is to lock the shifter in PARK until you depress the brake pedal. This is to prevent "sudden acceleration" where you engage the transmission with the brake off and the car shoots forward or backward. When you press the brake pedal a switch is closed that turns on the break lights and activates… Read More

The brake should release automatically when you take the vehicle out of park. The pedal will spring up on its on.
What is wrong with a 1998 Isuzu Rodeo V6 automatic when your truck starts fine but can't put the truck into gear?
Sounds like a faulty btsi solenoid (brake transmission shift interlock). Key on push on the brake and listen for a click by the shifter. If no click try wiggling the shifter and pushing forward.

Check the brake light fuse.
It is located on top of the steering column. Right above the shifter. There is also a lever underneath th steering column cover. Remove the cover and push the lever down, it releases the shifter.
First thing, check all fuses. Could be brake/safety interlock device but probably a fuse. Happened to me once.

What might prevent a 97 Eagle Talon from shifting into gear after replacing the wiring harness and steering column?
If the trans. is an automatic, the prob. might be in the trans. shift interlock solenoid. This is a solenoid that prevents shifting into gear unless your foot is on the brake pedal. The solenoid is located on the steering column or under the center console on floor shift models. Check to see if you have any connectors unplugged at these locations, if you do, find where it goes and your problem may go away.
Why would your brake lights and right turn signal not work and you have to turn the key half way to start the car in neutral so you will be able to change gears to drive on a 1992 Grand Marquis?
Check fuses, If brake lights do not work, transmission will not shift out of park. Brake light circuit is common to shift interlock. That's why you must step on brake to release interlock prior to shifting out of "Park" If stop lights are not working interlock will not release.
the brake interlock press on the brake to release it

Should be the same as the stop light fuse
Might be a problem with the brake/transmission interlock switch
There is a shift interlock system on that car which prevents you from shifting out of park until you hit the brake pedal. Basically how it works is there is 12V power at the brake light switch continually. When you touch the brakes, the switch sends power to the rear brake stop lights AND power to the solenoid on the shifter handle at the same time. If the solenoid is bad, it wont release a… Read More
Would a blown brake light fuse on 03 Saturn L200 cause gear shift to malfunction. How do you change fuse for brake lights on 03 Saturn?
Yes, a blown brake light fuse causes the shift interlock to malfunction. If the interlock can't tell if the brake is depressed or not, it won't shift out of park. The brake light fuse is a 15A in the engine bay fuse box.
For a car to run safely the brakes must be maintained. To change them, one must lift the car, remove the tired, remove the brake shoe, replace the old brake pad with a new brake pad, put the brake shoe in place, put the tire back on the car, and lower the car to the ground.
put your foot on the brake.... if that doesn't work you have to fix the wiring for the brake/transmission interlock
Check to see if your brake lights work. The brakes have to be pushed to get it out of park. If the brake lights don't work check the switch at the pedal. If the brake lights work the problem is with the shift interlock mechanism. There is a slot in the console with a plug in it. Take the plug out and insert a small screwdriver. This will allow you to shift out of park… Read More
