The filter is located behind the glove box. You remove the 2 screws at the top of the glove box and pivot it down to expose the filter housing. Press in the clip on each side of the filter housing and pull the filter out. You may find your truck does not even have this filter as it was an option in 1997 so I would look there first before buying one. If you purchase a Purolator Cabin Filter it comes with complete instructions.

I was looking at the 1997 Ford Ranger Owner Guide ( for North America ) and as far as I can tell there is no cabin air filter from the factory

The 1997 Ford F2 50 cabin air filter is located on the firewall in the engine compartment. The cabin air filter will be on the passenger side of the firewall.
