It is under the hood, just below the center of the windshield. There are three little latches to turn, and then it should open up. A new filter is about $26 on the internet, or you can try knocking the dirt and dust out of the existing one and gently washing it in a sinkfull of little-bit soapy water (use dish-soap) to get any greasy stuff out; Just be careful you don't damage the filter element.

Some models of the 2004 325i do not have an external fuel filter. They only have a filter inside the gas tank which is never replaced. These models I am told can be identified by having a steel gas tank. Have your dealer run the VIN to see if yours is one of these. I am not exactaly sure where the filter is for that specific car but should be as easy as find the gas line from the tank and follow it till you hit the enlargment in the tube where u can un cap it and take out the filter to replace it
